Skye Bortoli
Skye Bortoli at the Ideas Festival, March 2009
When Skye Bortoli speaks, the world listens. At just 16-years-old Skye has a list of achievements that any diplomat would be proud to claim. At age 11 she quickly decided on her primary goal; the total protection of whales.

Dedicated and determined, Skye is an effervescent realist and conservationist with a passionate interest in positively shaping the world around her. In her first book, Eco-Warrior, Skye tells her remarkable story so far, including family tragedy, her Aboriginal heritage and how she started the organisation ‘Teens Against Whaling' in 2006.

Skye has travelled to Anchorage, Alaska, to speak at the International Whaling Commission in a concerted effort to end commercial whaling practices worldwide and last year she went to Japan to present a petition to their government, calling for a halt to commercial whaling.

Skye's efforts as an environmentalist have already been recognised with many awards including the national Girlfriend of the Year award 2006, the International Fund for Animal Welfare Junior, and in 2008, Skye was the youngest ever finalist for NSW Woman of the Year.

Think Do Tank - I Want To Be A Writer… - 11–11.45am
Years 6–7

Award-winning author J.C. Burke has published a number of acclaimed books for teenagers and young adults, including Children's Book Council Notable Books White Lies and The Red Cardigan, Aurealis Awards finalist Nine Letters Long, The Story of Tom Brennan, Faking Sweet and Starfish Sisters. The Story of Tom Brennan won the 2006 CBC Book of the Year - Older Readers and the 2006 Australian Family Therapists Award for Children's Literature.

Skye Bortoli wouldn’t take no for an answer when she knew the cause was right. At 14, she went to Alaska and Japan, created an online community of young people around the world opposed to the whaling industry and won citizenship awards. She also published Eco Warrior; a ‘scrapbook’ account of her campaign.

J.C.Burke and Skye team up to talk writing, oceans and everything in between. Students looking for writing tips and how to turn your passion into words will enjoy this invigorating session with two dynamic and entertaining authors.
