Home > Speakers Michael Rayner is the Principal of Cox Rayner Architects. His work includes the Goodwill Bridge, Princess Alexandra Hospital, James Street Market, Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.
Rayner is a member of the Premier’s Smart State Council and of the State’s Creative Industries Leadership Group, and is Adjunct Professor in Architecture at the University of Queensland. As a judge of the 2005 Queensland Design Awards, Rayner commented:
“For me, good design is fundamentally about foreseeing and then manifesting new ways to enhance our lives through our habitat. It can involve planning whole city environments, buildings and public/private spaces and these elements that make them up, such as surfaces, furnishings and hardware.”
His current significant projects are the redevelopment of South Bank TAFE, the SW1 mixed use development on Melbourne Street, Brisbane City Council’s Green Square in Fortitude Valley, and the Thuringowa Riverway Cultural Development – the latter a focus on land art and sustainable architecture. International projects include Singapore EXPO and the creation of the new Singapore CBD waterfront at Marina Bay.
Michael is a persistent advocate for collaborative design with artists, for architecture distinctive of the subtropics and tropics, and for enhancing connectivity in the city, particularly by a continuous line of pedestrian bridges and avenues.
Michael Rayner will participate in panel discussions at the Ideas Festival 29 March – 2 April 2006 in Brisbane.
