Michael Keniger

Queensland's Chief Architect, Professor Keniger is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Queensland. His principle expertise is architecture and urban change and Australian contemporary architecture.

Michael Keniger headed the University of Queensland's Department of Architecture 1990-2000, he was appointed as the inaugural Head of the School of Geography Planning and Architecture in 2000 and in 2005 was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

Since 1999 Professor Michael Keniger has held the advisory position of the Queensland Government Architect with a specific responsibility to advise on urban and architectural projects of major significance.

In recognition of his contribution to architecture and to the community, the Queensland Board of Architects awarded him the 1998 Silver Medal as "Architect of the Year". The award followed his earlier election to Life Fellowship of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects for his distinguished contribution to the profession of architecture.

Michael was a member 1996-2001 of the Design Review Panel of the Olympic Coordination Authority and has assisted with many significant projects including the National Museum, the Queensland Gallery of Art and the Queensland State Library Millennium Library Project and is a member of the board of the South Bank Corporation. He has served as the Chair or been a member of the selection panels for design competitions for major public and university buildings at the request of the Federal Government, the Queensland State Government, various local authorities, the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (Qld) and the University of Queensland.

His principal expertise concerns architecture and urban change and Australian contemporary architecture. He has contributed extensively to the theory and practice of architecture, urban design and design education.
